Battery storage
A home battery stores electricity — from your solar panels or cheap off-peak power — to use when it is needed, so more generation is used in the home and less is bought at peak price.
What it is
A wall- or floor-mounted battery with an inverter that charges from solar PV or from the grid on a cheap overnight tariff, then discharges to power the home in the evening. Sized to the property and usually installed alongside or after solar.
Why it matters for 2030
Storage increases the value of on-site solar and cuts the electricity a home draws at peak cost, supporting the running-cost figure the EPC is built on. It also gives a home some resilience against price spikes and short outages.
Which homes suit it
Properties with solar PV, or homes on a time-of-use tariff that can charge cheaply overnight. Space is needed for the unit in a garage, utility or plant area, with access to the consumer unit.
Grants that apply
Battery storage installed with solar is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, and standalone batteries also qualify for that VAT relief. We check any household grant eligibility case by case.
